Louisville Creative Centre Description:

The mission of the Louisville Creative Writing Centre is threefold. The primary purpose of the centre is to provide arts and writing workshops, classes, and lessons for all levels to interested and talented people in the Metro Louisville, Jefferson County, and Kentuckiana area. We seek to bring the personal gratification and self-actualization of the creative arts to those who cannot afford other means of education, have exhausted other means of education, or simply desire to work in communion with other writers. The second purpose is to find and identify emerging talent and pair that talent with already established writers, musicians, visual artists, and performing artists. The third purpose of the centre is to provide a focal point of social interaction for individuals in the arts community to find, socialize, and network with one another.

Venture Philanthropy Partners (VPP) is a philanthropic investment organization that helps great leaders build strong, high-performing nonprofit institutions. It concentrates money, expertise, and personal contacts to improve the lives and boost the opportunities of children and youth of low-income families in the National Capital Region.

Whom We Support
We invest in high-potential nonprofit organizations that are serving the core developmental, learning, and educational needs of children from low-income families in the National Capital Region. We focus on philanthropic investment opportunities that have the greatest potential to improve the lives of children and that can help us demonstrate our strategic, engaged, and highly leveraged approach.

How We Work
When we enter into an investment partnership, we aspire to serve as a trusted advisor, helping great leaders build stronger, more effective, more enduring organizations to better serve children. Our investments are not intended to fund program costs. Instead, the focus of every VPP investment is helping leaders build the strength of the organization behind their programs, often referred to as "organizational capacity." We support our portfolio organizations through large-scale, multi-year funding; through the expertise of our in-house investment team; and through the leverage of a wide network of outside contacts, resources, and professional advisors.

Origins
In June 2000, Venture Philanthropy Partners (VPP) was created. Our co-founders—Raul Fernandez, Mark Warner, and Mario Morino—recruited 26 other technology and business leaders and several foundations to join together and contribute more than $30 million to capitalize VPP’s first investment fund. The Morino Institute, led by Mario Morino, provided separate funding to create, incubate, and build the organization and its capacity. These 29 founding investors united behind a bold vision to alter the status quo for children in need of opportunity and, at the same time, create a different, innovative approach to philanthropy.

At Yum! Brands, we believe in giving back to the community and in making a difference in the lives of our customers and their families. One way we accomplish that is through the Yum! Brands Foundation, which supports charities working in the areas of hunger relief, youth, education, and the arts.

Through the Foundation Grant Program, Yum! has contributed millions of dollars to organizations in the Louisville area. One example of that giving is our partnership with the Dare to Care Food Bank, the largest hunger relief organization in Kentucky.

In June of 2002, Yum! Brands Foundation became a major corporate sponsor of Dare to Care Food Bank by committing $1 million annually to end hunger in the Kentuckiana area. The funding has enabled Dare to Care to expand the Kids Café network from nine locations to 19, serving over 100,000 nutritious meals to children in need each year. The partnership has also enabled Dare to Care to improve food delivery to its 29 distribution centers and initiate Patrol Against Hunger, a program where police officers deliver Dare to Care food boxes to homebound seniors in need. The program is the first of its kind in the nation and has expanded citywide to all eight Louisville Metro Police districts, providing about 10,000 meals each month to the elderly.

Through the Foundation Employee Matching Gift Program, Yum! supports and encourages employees to contribute financially to non-profit organizations by matching their gifts dollar-for-dollar.

Finally, through the Foundation Board Support Program, Yum! supports employees who choose to volunteer time and expertise by serving on the boards of non-profit organizations. Under this program, when a Yum employee commits to serving on the board of a qualified non-profit organization, the Yum! Brands Foundation will provide financial support to that organization.

Vision of the Gheens Foundation, Inc.

The vision of the Gheens Foundation, Inc. is to represent Edwin and Mary Jo Gheens in a manner that brings credit to their legacy. We will be mindful of the responsibilities to our communities as the area's second largest foundation. We will be distinguished by addressing the ongoing needs of Louisville, Kentucky and Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes, Louisiana while pro-actively seeking new and creative ways to have profound and long-term impact on a few selected projects in chosen fields of focus. This will be done while managing the foundation's assets in such a manner to assure long term viability.

Introducing: GivingNet - Proud Legacy, New Name

Earlier this year we changed our name to GivingNet, Inc. (we were formerly known as Community Foundations of America, Inc.) We believe our new name transmits a fresh message and better reflects the range of organizations that increasingly work with us and through us to enhance the impact of giving (our new mission).

Founded in March 2000 by a group of top community foundations, GivingNet provides products, services, capacity building and R&D to a network of organizations engaged in bringing more and better giving to communities, locally, nationally and globally.

Since 1984, The Community Foundation of Louisville, through its donors, has built a charitable endowment to support the nonprofits that make our region a vital and secure place in which to live and work.

With more than 1,100 charitable funds set up by individuals, families, businesses and other organizations, we made grants in 2007 totaling $28 million.

We help donors with their giving today and enable their generosity to continue after their lifetimes, supporting the causes they cared about and solving problems we can’t imagine today.

The Community Foundation makes it easy for anyone to become a philanthropist. We invite you to learn about us, our grantmaking, and how to join our family of donors.

The Wallace Foundation seeks to support and share effective ideas and practices that will strengthen education leadership, arts participation and out-of-school learning.

For contact information click here.

Introduction:

A legacy of DeWitt and Lila Acheson Wallace, creators of The Reader’s Digest Association, The Wallace Foundation has grown to become among the top 40 private foundations in the United States, with assets of more than $1.5 billion. Through an integrated, team-based approach involving research and communications, in addition to grant-making, the Foundation extends its influence beyond its direct grantees. This is a recognition that significant and sustainable change in our education and cultural systems requires information and insight, and the Foundation had set as its strategy to be a “knowledge center” for policy-makers and practitioners in its areas of focus.

Neil Gaiman on Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

Crowley and Aziraphale's 2006 New Year's resolutions

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett present New Year's resolutions of the demon Crowley and the angelic Aziraphale — characters in Good Omens, publishing in February 2006...

Crowley:

Resolution #1: I must accept that Super-Gluing valuable coins to the sidewalk and then watching events from a nearby café is not proper demonic activity.

Resolution #2: The same applies to rearranging the letters on wayside pulpits.

Resolution #3: Try to come up with something as good as cell phone ringtones, following one last stab at convincing Downstairs that cell phone ringtones are right up there in the whole Human Misery stakes. And iPods. Has anybody Down There even said thank you for iPods? Or "Googling yourself?" Frankly, I deserve some kind of award for "Googling yourself."

Resolution #4: I must encourage greedy people to use the term, "Low-hanging fruit," because that's just like old times.

Resolution #5: This year, I will get a desk near the window.

Resolution #6: I will try to understand why Hell is a no-smoking area. I just think it's ridiculous having to stand around outside the gates, that's all.

Resolution #7: On the orders of Head Office I will encourage the belief in Intelligent Design, because it upsets everyone.

Resolution #8: Stop Googling myself.

Aziraphale:

Resolution #1: Spread peace and love and glad tidings of great joy throughout the world. Also try to get out more.

Resolution #2: I will be charitable to people who use the term "core values," however difficult this may be.

Resolution #3: Notwithstanding Resolution #2 (above), I will redouble my efforts to have the utterance of the phrase "core values" classified as a deadly sin. I believe Himself is with me on this one.

Resolution #4: I will try to be nicer to the customers. They want to buy books; I want to sell them. It can't be that hard. (Memo to self: Regular opening hours? Mark prices on books?)

Resolution #5: I will try to be polite to Gabriel, no matter what the provocation.

Resolution #6: Find out exactly what an "Internet" is.

Resolution #7: Really must resume dancing lessons. Learn the "Galloping Major," the "Gay Gordons," the "Mashed Potatoes." Possibly even the "Twist"?

Resolution #8: Thwart Infernal Wiles (ongoing).

Resolution #9: I will try to understand why Heaven is a non-smoking area.

Resolution #10: On the orders of Head Office I will encourage the belief in Intelligent Design – despite the fact that the human airway crosses the digestive tract. Who thought that was intelligent?

Resolution #11: Feed the ducks.

Kneadatite is a room-temperature curing epoxy/polyamide sealant in two-part tape form. It is stable in its packaged form consisting of base and curing agent in two different tubes. The base and curing agent are of contrasting colors so that when kneaded together, complete mixing is easily observed. Kneadatite's adhesive properties allow the artist to add detail gradually, before or after previously applied Kneadatite has fully hardened. It has excellent adhesion to stone, ceramic, metal, wood, and many plastics including vinyl. When fully hardened, it can be painted, sanded, filed, drilled, tapped, screwed, etc. To use, simply cut off an equal amount of Blue and Yellow, fold together and knead, mixing thoroughly to a uniform green color. Kneadatite® BLUE YELLOW has an extremely smooth, non-grainy texture, making it the ideal medium for sculpting intricate shape and fine detail. Once mixed, it has a worklife of 90 minutes, allowing time for shaping and detailing with wet fingers or tools. Altering the mix with more blue component produces a faster, harder cure for building structures; the use of more yellow component results in a slower, softer cure for detail work.

The Grant Institute
Grants 101: Professional Grant Proposal Writing Workshop
will be held in
Louisville, Kentucky
February 20 - 22, 2008
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

The Grant Institute's Grants 101 course is an intensive and detailed introduction to the process, structure, and skill of professional proposal writing. This course is characterized by its ability to act as a thorough overview, introduction, and refresher at the same time. In this course, participants will learn the entire proposal writing process and complete the course with a solid understanding of not only the ideal proposal structure, but a holistic understanding of the essential factors, which determine whether or not a program gets funded. Through the completion of interactive exercises and activities, participants will complement expert lectures by putting proven techniques into practice. This course is designed for both the beginner looking for a thorough introduction and the intermediate looking for a refresher course that will strengthen their grant acquisition skills. This class, simply put, is designed to get results by creating professional grant proposal writers.

Participants will become competent program planning and proposal writing professionals after successful completion of the Grants 101 course. In three active and informative days, students will be exposed to the art of successful grant writing practices, and led on a journey that ends with a masterful grant proposal.

Grants 101 consists of three (3) courses that will be completed during the three-day workshop.

(1) Fundamentals of Program Planning

This course is centered on the belief that "it's all about the program." This intensive course will teach professional program development essentials and program evaluation. While most grant writing "workshops" treat program development and evaluation as separate from the writing of a proposal, this class will teach students the relationship between overall program planning and grant writing.

(2) Professional Grant Writing

Designed for both the novice and experienced grant writer, this course will make each student an overall proposal writing specialist. In addition to teaching the basic components of a grant proposal, successful approaches, and the do's and don'ts of grant writing, this course is infused with expert principles that will lead to a mastery of the process. Strategy resides at the forefront of this course's intent to illustrate grant writing as an integrated, multidimensional, and dynamic endeavor. Each student will learn to stop writing the grant and to start writing the story. Ultimately, this class will illustrate how each component of the grant proposal represents an opportunity to use proven techniques for generating support.

(3) Grant Research

At its foundation, this course will address the basics of foundation, corporation, and government grant research. However, this course will teach a strategic funding research approach that encourages students to see research not as something they do before they write a proposal, but as an integrated part of the grant seeking process. Students will be exposed to online and database research tools, as well as publications and directories that contain information about foundation, corporation, and government grant opportunities. Focusing on funding sources and basic social science research, this course teaches students how to use research as part of a strategic grant acquisition effort.

Registration
$597.00 tuition includes all materials and certificates.

Each student will receive:

Abort, Retry, Ignore?
by Anonymous

Once upon a midnight dreary, fingers cramped and vision bleary,
System manuals piled high and wasted paper on the floor,
Longing for the warmth of bed sheets, still I sat there doing spreadsheets.
Having reached the bottom line I took a floppy from the drawer,
I then invoked the SAVE command and waited for the disk to store,
Only this and nothing more.

Deep into the monitor peering, long I sat there wond'ring, fearing,
Doubting, while the disk kept churning, turning yet to churn some more.
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token.
"Save!" I said, "You cursed mother! Save my data from before!"
One thing did the phosphors answer, only this and nothing more,
Just, "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

Was this some occult illusion, some maniacal intrusion?
These were choices undesired, ones I'd never faced before.
Carefully I weighed the choices as the disk made impish noises.
The cursor flashed, insistent, waiting, baiting me to type some more.
Clearly I must press a key, choosing one and nothing more,
From "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

With fingers pale and trembling, slowly toward the keyboard bending,
Longing for a happy ending, hoping all would be restored,
Praying for some guarantee, timidly, I pressed a key.
But on the screen there still persisted words appearing as before.
Ghastly grim they blinked and taunted, haunted, as my patience wore,
Saying "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

I tried to catch the chips off guard, and pressed again, but twice as hard.
I pleaded with the cursed machine: I begged and cried and then I swore.
Now in mighty desperation, trying random combinations,
Still there came the incantation, just as senseless as before.
Cursor blinking, angrily winking, blinking nonsense as before.
Reading, "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

There I sat, distraught, exhausted, by my own machine accosted.
Getting up I turned away and paced across the office floor.
And then I saw a dreadful sight: a lightning bolt cut through the night.
A gasp of horror overtook me, shook me to my very core.
The lightning zapped my previous data, lost and gone forevermore.
Not even, "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

To this day I do not know the place to which lost data go.
What demonic nether world us wrought where lost data will be stored,
Beyond the reach of mortal souls, beyond the ether, into black holes?
But sure as there's C, Pascal, Lotus, Ashton-Tate and more,
You will be one day be left to wander, lost on some Plutonian shore,
Pleading, "Abort, Retry, Ignore?"

The National Council of Nonprofit Associations (NCNA) is the network of state and regional nonprofit associations serving over 20,000 members in 41 states and the District of Columbia. NCNA links local organizations to a national audience through state associations and helps small and midsize nonprofits: manage and lead more effectively; collaborate and exchange solutions; engage in critical policy issues affecting the sector; and achieve greater impact in their communities. NCNA is also the convening organization for the Nonprofit Congress, an unprecedented effort to unite nonprofits and strengthen the charitable sector.

Greetings from Duotrope's Digest, Duotrope's Digest Weekly Wire, Novel/Collection Edition

We wish all of you who are participating in NaNoWriMo this year the best success! For those of you not familiar with NaNoWriMo, the participants set out to write the first draft of a novel during the month of November.

Here are the latest market additions and updates, as well as some upcoming themed publication deadlines.

Paying Markets Added (since last newsletter):

1: BeachSide Press. Payscale for Novels/Collections: Pays semi-pro advance & > 15% royalties. From the publisher: "BeachSide Press is a small, independent publisher of satire, romance, and historical fiction. We are looking for well written, wholesome manuscripts by credible, promotable authors."

2: Children of Atlantis. Payscale for Short Fiction: Non-paying Plus Royalties. Payscale for Novels/Collections: Pays no advance & > 15% royalties. From the publisher: "Premise: Plato wrote that Atlantis sank "in a single day and night of misfortune." Survivors of the sinking of Atlantis found refuge elsewhere in the world. As an advanced society, Atlantis possessed knowledge far beyond that of the rest of the world. How did their knowledge affect their new lives? What secrets were passed down through the generations? Just how different were Atlanteans from other humans? Were they human at all? You get the idea. Now run with it."

3: Cobblestone Press. Payscale for Short Fiction: Non-paying Plus Royalties. Payscale for Novels/Collections: Pays no advance & > 15% royalties. From the publisher: "We are an electronic publisher of sensual and erotic romance seeking creative storytelling and original style. Because we at Cobblestone Press are selective about what we accept, we are looking for authors to set the standard of writing for this new press; authors that show extraordinary ability to weave tales of romance through strong, unforgettable characters, plots that twist and turn with layers of conflict and emotion, and a style that sets them apart from other writers in the market. We accept all levels of sensual to erotic romance. While we want our authors to feel free to be creative as possible we do insist on strong plots, fully developed characters, and a Happily Ever After ending. All sexually active characters in the manuscript must be at least 18 no matter the time period."

4: Drollerie Press. Payscale for Short Fiction: Non-paying Plus Royalties. Payscale for Poetry: Non-paying Plus Royalties. Payscale for Novels/Collections: Pays no advance & > 15% royalties. From the publisher: "Drollerie Press publishes transformative fiction focused on myths, fairy tales, and legends in print and electronic format. You might characterize some of our stories as, at least in part, speculative fiction, mythic fiction, slipstream, new weird, urban fantasy, dark fantasy, paranormal, magical realism, mystery, science fiction, literary fiction, erotica, historical, or horror. Our authors use one or more of the tools of these genres to provide stories with mythic themes."
